Just over a year ago, two men adjourned after dinner to the balcony of the Palms Casino in Vegas. There they would take in the glittering vista, light a couple of Cuban cigars and trade tales of the good life.
Big shots, the both of them.
An on-the-rise actor and the high-rolling professional gambler he was about to portray in a major motion picture, 21.
Too bad neither of them could get the blasted stogies to light.
“And we were just reduced to the clowns that we are,” recalls Jim Sturgess, the actor. “It broke down all the boundaries very quickly. And then we just went, ‘Okay, I’m not that cool.’ ‘I’m not that cool, either — let’s just talk about what really happened.’ ”
Jim Sturgess divided critics with Across The Universe, but with 21 hitting number one in the US, it seems that now is his moment. Like most men of a certain age who possess a lot of vinyl, I was pretty excited when I heard that Julie Taymor (the woman behind Titus and Frida) was directing a musical based on the works of The Beatles.
And then I saw Across The Universe. And I felt like punching everyone involved in it.
Especially Bono, when he comes trouncing through as Dr Robert, squeezing the life out of ‘I Am The Walrus’.
Last week Jim made his rounds to some talk shows and I now have caps and some clips of these appearances for you. Thanks to ‘visiontellie2′ for the Kimmel clip! This isn’t the entire The Sauce interview because it’s not available, but there is a cam version on Youtube if you wish to see it in it’s entirety atleast. He was also interviewed by Spill.com recently about 21, it’s such a priceless interview worthy of a download for sure!

Jim Sturgess is well-aware he’s having an incredibly fortunate year. He is, after all, the unknown actor plucked from a worldwide casting call by director Julie Taymor to star as love-struck dockworker Jude in last year’s Beatles-inspired musical Across the Universe.
He followed that up with his recent turn in The Other Boleyn Girl as the loyal brother to a scheming Anne Boleyn. Now the 26-year-old Brit is headlining another impressive roster: 21, in which he stars alongside Kevin Spacey and Laurence Fishburne. The film features Sturgess as an MIT student who takes his card-counting skills to Las Vegas, with dire consequences.
Baby-faced British actor and musician Jim Sturgess had been making the rounds of small film and TV work for the past eight or nine years, when director Julie Taymor decided he would be just right for a lead in her Beatles musical Across the Universe.
Since that film knocked him up a few rungs on the recognition ladder, he’s been busier than ever — with a feature part in The Other Boleyn Girl and a lead in 21, the based-on-fact story of the MIT blackjack team that cheated a couple of million dollars out of Las Vegas in a card-counting scheme.
